Special Year-End Message
Help the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy End 2014 Strong
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy believes that every child and family deserves an equal opportunity to learn to read. And when you make a donation today, your support will have double the impact!
Many of our nation’s children face great challenges because they’re unable to gain the necessary literacy skills to match their peers – skills necessary for success. And millions of parents lack the basic reading and writing abilities to help their children in school.
That is why the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is committed to family literacy programs that allow families to learn together. Parents who are able to model literacy in the home are also able to help their children become successful adults.
As we launch our next 25 years, the Foundation is growing as never before, and you are an important part of that growth. In the coming year, with your continued support, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy hopes to:
- Expand our innovative Teen Trendsetters™ program into three more states. This program, which pairs teen mentors with first, second, or third graders who are six months behind in reading, has a phenomenal success rate. Last year, more than half of the first graders in our program ended the school year reading on grade level!
- Increase the number of literacy programs nationwide so families in urgent need of literacy skills don’t have to be put on a waiting list.
- Continue to educate the American public and help raise awareness across America about the need for family literacy programs.
But we need your help to make this possible.
More than 36 million people in the United States are functionally illiterate. That means they don’t have the skills to understand a basic news article or read a medicine label or even a menu. When you give your year-end gift today, it will be applied to the Challenge Gift – to help turn the $25,000 Challenge Gift into $50,000 to help change this stark reality. Please give by December 31, 2014, to be sure your gift will have twice the impact.
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is the nation’s leading advocate for family literacy. Founded by former First Lady Barbara Bush, we believe that family literacy is key to solving today’s most critical challenges: social and economic mobility, quality of life, and global competitiveness. Research shows that reading proficiently by third grade is directly linked to successes later in life, yet millions of American children are struggling to read today. Thanks to the generous support of individual donors and our corporate sponsors, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy provides educational opportunities for young children and their parents, helping them achieve the literacy skills they need to pursue a brighter future.
